Pass the Domino

The domino effect is all about falling forward into the story of good and evil. After participants journey through the six-week experience, they receive a domino piece specifically for them. The domino piece represents the work that Jesus did on the cross to reverse the domino effect of evil, and it also represents the responsibility we have in joining Him in the story of good overcoming and redeeming evil.

As participants take a domino (or as many as they want), they are challenged to pass the domino. They should pass the piece to someone who was or is influential in the story of good in their lives - someone who passed them a piece of God's goodness by the way he or she lived and loved.

This website is a place where participants can share their stories of passing the piece. After you pass the domino, you can read the stories of how people around the country are passing the piece and joining God's story of good. And as each sequential person receives the domino, that person will be given the same instructions to pass the piece. And on this site, you can see how you have been part of creating a domino effect that will literally ripple around the world and remind us of the reality that we are all caught up in the domino effect of God's redemption and the story of good.

You can submit your story here, and you can read stories of the domino effect below.

Susan – Crowley, TX – May 2010
Got it: I got the domino at The Grove youth group at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Burleson, Texas.
Gave it: I gave the domino to a fellow youth leader, Stephen Smotherman, aka :Smo.” Smo is an amazing single father to 4 boys who speaks Truth over our students, encouraging and challenging them. He puts our daily Domino Effect devo on The Grove Student Ministry Facebook page every day - even when on a field trip to NASA with his son’s 3rd grade class.
--
Ann – Jacobus, Pa. – January 2010
Got it: I got it from the Wayfarer resource The Domino Effect which I did as a winter retreat in January 2010
Gave it: I gave the dominos to my youth group at the retreat. I gave it to: Kevin, Joe, Zane, Lindsay, Madi, Elena, Andrew, Avery, Garrett, and Aaron, and adults Scott, Margo, and Heather. I gave dominos to them to follow through on this and because they have all given me a piece of God too by attending this particular spiritual retreat.
--
Nick – Bedford, Ind. – January 2010>
Got it: I received the domino from one of my Student Leaders (Travis). He told me he wanted to give me a domino because I had made a difference in his life.
Gave it: Just after the start of 2010 I sent the domino onto my former youth pastor. I realized that a lot of the things Travis appreciated about me had been modeled for me by Phil. It was a joy to pass it along.
--
Artus – Seelyville, Ind. – January 2010
Got it: Our small group at church studied the series The Domino Effect. Jason was our leader and did an outstanding job.

Got it: Our small group did the domino effect. It was headed up by Jason that did a great job.
Gave it: I am going to pass my domino to my son that is a very devoted Christian and studies his Bible every morning before going to work. If I had a problem he has always told me the way he felt about the situation even if it was not what I wanted to hear. He is very dedicated to his God, family and job.
--
Bud - Terre Haute, IN - December 2009
Got it: From a small group study with Jason at our church.
Gave it: I gave two dominos to two very good friends that I have known for many years. One that I drove a truck with for 28 years before we retired. We are still close friends and attend a breakfast once a month with a retired group of truckers. The other is a good friend that I attended church with a few years ago. He had made an impression on me.
--
Jason - Terre Haute, IN - November 2009
Got it: I led a small group on the Domino Effect at my church.
Gave it: I gave the domino to one of the strongest Christian women I know, my sister, Genie. She has always tried to have a positive influence on my life. I know she has spent many nights praying for me and my salvation. I only hope that I can be half of the ambassador for Christ that she is.
--
Caroline - Greenville, SC - November 2009
Got it: After finishing the Domino Effect six week study, my Discipleship Group leader at my church gave me this domino and explained how to pass the domino.
Gave it: I'm giving my domino to my friend Emily. Emily is a great Christian influence as well as a friend to me. She doesn't let anyone change who she is. If you just spend a few minutes with her you can see God working through her.
--
Serena - Fremont, Ind. - August 2009
Got it: I got the domino from my boyfriend's sister, Natalie.
Gave it: I choose to give this domino to the one who didn't want to hang out with me much when I was little but is now one of my best friends, my sister Amber. She is such a phenomenal woman of God and impacts other lives more than she probably knows. She has always been there for me when I am in need and somehow remains patient. I never feel judged when sharing deep thoughts. Her wisdom is awesome, and I have learned so much by just being observant of her life. I am so blessed to have her a part of my life.
--
Natalie - South Bend, Ind. - August 2009
Got it: I got the domino when our small group completed the Domino Effect series. How awesome!
Gave it: I gave it to a great woman of God, who happens to be my brother's girlfriend. Serena is so young, but a great woman of God. That is an inspiration to me, and I'm sure to many others. Her faith is ever-growing and focus is clear. It's neat to see her strive to love others like Christ loves us. It has been a blessing to me to get to know her and to spend time with her, having fun and talking about goofy and serious things. Pass it on, Serena!
--
Brent - Zephyrhillis, Fla. - June 2009
Got it: I got the domino teaching The Domino Effect DVD Series for the second time.
Gave it: I gave this to my lead pastor at New Walk Church. He has helped me grow as a Christian, as a father, and as a husband through his Sunday messages but also through small groups, like X-Trails, Wild at Heart and Lead Like Jesus. He has also given me opportunities to use my talents to help on the media team at the church.
--
Kevin - Redford, Mich. - May 2009
Got it: I completed The Domino Effect study with our small group Bible study with Larry & Precilla's group from Northridge Church in Plymouth, Mich.
Gave it: I am giving a number of dominos out to many people. First to my parents Robert & Dolores who prayed for me for many years to quit drinking & to straighten up my act. To my sister-in-law Corinne who encouraged me to listen to a Joyce Meyer audio that along with prayer gave me the will & desire to go into Oakdale Recovery in Canton, Mich. To the pastor who gave a message on God's love at Oakdale Recovery. To my Aunt Karen who sent me letters & constantly inspired me while I was incarcerated. To Matt my first Bible study leader who instilled in me hope & gave me so much inspiration & encouragement while doing the Crown Ministry Bible study. Through all this I've learned to pray for, love & forgive everyone & do my best to get others to love others. Remember this always: "DO WHAT PLEASES GOD & GOD WILL BE PLEASED WITH YOU" - Kevin (Sparky)

Dwayne - Poplar Bluff, Mo. - May 2009

Gave it: By mail.
--
Sierra - Poplar Bluff, Mo. - April 2009
Got it: I got my domino from my youth leader after we had completed the series The Domino Effect.
Gave it: I gave my domino to one of my best friends, Mikayla. We have both been through the bad parts, but we now talk about God and church all the time. She attends a different youth group than I do, but is the same age as me. She has helped me through problems and made me think of the positive side of things. I also have helped her through her hardships, and I just wanted to thank her for being a good friend and persuading me toward the right thing. I owe my domino to you Mikayla!
--
Holden - Hickory - April 2009
Got it: The domino was given to me after my youth group completed The Domino Effect study.
Gave it: I gave the domino to Ben McDaniel. Ben is the YoungLife leader for Saint Stephens High School. Ben has been a true inspiration for me to go out and love people and to share Jesus Christ with them when I can. He has also challenged me and others in our Bible study to listen to God's call for our lives and to follow God above all things. Also that our responsibility to God should exceed any other responsibility in my life. Ben is a great guy and one of the best friends i could ever have. And I hope God takes care of him and his family anywhere they go. And I hope Ben that you will remember all of things that you've told me, Jesse, Matt, and everyone else at Campaigners. Just listen to God and have faith in Him. And I hope that you will keep in touch and raise Graddy in the way the Lord instructs you. Ben you're a great friend and i hope you know that YoungLife won't ever be the same without you, and that no one at Saint will be able to forget you man. I know I won't.

Starlyne - Westland, Mich. - April 2009
Got it: From my small group bible study in Westland, a cool group of folks I am blessed to be in fellowship with!
Gave it: I passed on the domino to Sister Brown in Kansas. This real "soul sister" was very impactful in providing unabashed love and kindly guidance and correction to both my husband and I (newlyweds, away from home) when we were stationed in Kansas. She showed us, with consistent acts, of what God's love is like and made us yearn to be able to the same. It has been over twenty years since we first met Sister Brown, but it feels so fresh and new, as if we were still that young couple, so earnestly wanting to learn about this Christian faith deal and what it offers. My husband and I phoned Sister Brown to inform her of the domino and told her to expect it via the mail. She is thrilled about it, but true to form, is more interested in knowing how my husband and I are doing, as well as updates on the kids. She is such a blessing...
--
Halimah - Canton, Mich. - April 2009
Got it: I received my domino in my small group after completing the lesson.
Gave it: I am passing it on to 3 people that have made a great impact in my spiritual journey. My mother Ameena, Flossie and Roy Thurston, and Kendrick Neal. My mom has always told me to put God in front of everything I do. Flossie and Roy have always encouraged me and inspired me and kept me in church when I was not close to home. And Kendrick has always prayed with me and sent me scriptures and words of encouragement when I felt like I was at my lowest point and always helped me look at the bright side of things. God truly has placed his angels here on earth to keep us encouraged.
--
Ruth - Romulus, Mich. - April 2009
Got it: From our small group study of the Domino Effect. It was a great study!
Gave it: I gave 3 dominos away so far. The first one I gave to my husband Wally the night after our last session of this study. He is my daily rock and the one I lean on to guide me in Christ's path every day. He is patient & kind to all he comes in contact with & is a great role model to our girls & their husbands. The next two were given on Easter Sunday 2009. I gave one to my best friend Cyndi for her display of grace & commitment to the Lord. She is my sister in Christ. She is the best Mom to her daughter & a great wife to her husband. She is always there to lend a hand at the church or wherever she is & willing to share God's love with everyone. The last one was given to my Mom. She is the one that made me go to church as a youth & taught me the way a Christian should be and displays his Grace daily. She was my first exposure to God's love.

--

Matt - Dade City, Fla. - April 2009

Got it: I got the domino from attending the last session of a small group, that one of my small group leaders from youth night was leading. I was there to check on some of my leaders to see how they were doing and I ended up staying for the entire class.

Gave it: I gave the domino to De-bor-ah. If it wasn't for Deborah I wouldn't be where I am today. Back in '06 Deborah convinced my wife to get me to church with them. I kicked and screamed like a 10 year old but went just to shut them up! Church was boring and I made a lot of excuses why not to be there. Then we found New Walk. If Deborah were to never have persisted like she did I wouldn't be serving like I do, Tithing like I do, in small groups like I am, SAVED, BAPTIZED, or "OH YEAH" a full time Youth Leader. She has absolutely changed my life and my families life so I owe this Domino to you Deborah. You are an ANGEL, Lots of Love!!!!

--

Gregory - Garden City, Mich. - April 2009
Got it: From participating in a small group through NorthRidge Church and from my wife.
Gave it: I gave the domino to my beloved wife Angie. She has brought me closer to Christ through our marriage and commitment to church and our small group. God has blessed me with a good woman. That is why I gave my domino to her. She is an inspiration in my life.
I gave another domino to my mother because she has been patient with me through my illness. She always shows me the bright side of things. When the going got tough my mother was there to inspire to carry on. I know things haven't been easy for her but she has a healing touch.
I gave a third domino to Mom #2 who I call Ma. She was with me during the tough times when my wife was in the hospital. She is an inspiration to me in my life and I love her as much as my own Mother. She is a trooper and is always been on my side. She has made my birthdays and holidays special again.

-

Deana - Dade City, Fla. - April 2009
Got it: I got the domino after participating in the 6-week small group series The Domino Effect.
Gave it: I gave the domino to a co-worker of mine who never gave up on reaching out to me. She was very persistent over the years and I finally let what she was sharing with me "sink in." My life hasn't been the same since. She has inspired me to live my life for God and to get involved, walk in love, and spread the Word. I feel like a brand new person. I'm finally "living" my life (with a purpose) and I owe it all to her...for not giving up on me. I only hope I can inspire others the way she inspired me.
--
Brent- Zephyrhills, Fla. - February 2009
Got it: I got the domino teaching The Domino Effect DVD Series.
Gave it: I gave the domino to my youth pastor and one to his wife. They had, and continue to have, a huge impact on my life. My youth pastor led me to Christ and was like a second father to me. They both helped me grow in my spiritual walk with God and also kept me out of trouble as a teenager.
--
Gayle - Midland - January 2009
Got it: From my friend Marsha.
Gave it: To my friend Lorraine who lives everyday to glorify God our Father. She is always full of God's love.
--
Ron - Melbourne, Fla. - January 2009
Got it: My wife and I were in charge of choosing the next focus topic for our small Bible group. My wife and I took several hours investigating different Christian discussion aids and discovered The Domino Effect. This was a familiar topic but from a completely different viewpoint and provided new insight into my Christian outlook and actions.
Gave it: After some review of all my associates and friends, I came to the sad conclusion there were only a handful of individuals in my life who were worthy or receiving the domino. This rude awakening has added to the experience and set in motion on how I perceive the importance of relationships. I chose Mr. James Powers because of his continuous example of good Christian life style while still maintaining his rough edges from his pre-"born-again" life.
--
Kathy - Melbourne, Fla. - January 2009
Got it: Our life group just finished the study.
Gave it: I gave my domino to my sister-in-law. She has always been an inspiration to me in the way she lives her life. She has a beautiful, happy, loving disposition. She makes everyone feel loved and welcome the minute she meets them. When she hears that you have a cold or are not feeling well, she will be there with homemade chicken soup. Her home is always open and she is always ready to offer love and support. There are so many examples of her selflessness, I can't express them all. She has truly blessed my life.
--
Kimberly - North Port, Fla. - December 2008

Got it: My husband and I have been asked by our Pastor to start a small group with our church friends, and we decided to use The Domino Effect as our teaching subject. In today's world it is so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day routines. We sometimes try to hard to be the perfect parent, the best employee or even the best wives or husbands. We don't always stop to think how we are getting to these points. Sometimes we may skip over steps to get to the goal faster. I hope that this class will help us to stop and ask ourselves: How would Jesus have done it? I hope that it teaches us patience and self control to over come the evil steps we take to become the best. So in conclusion, I received my domino by purchasing The Domino Effect kit to share with friends.

--

Ian - Grain Valley, Mo. - November 2008

Got it: From The Domino Effect lessons that we presented to our youth group.

Gave it: A friend of mine that had rejected me and Christ for a long time finally hit rock bottom, and when he came back to me asking for forgiveness, I was more than willing. I went over salvation with him, and he is turning his life around to live for God. He is a good man and is still going through hard times, but the difference is already obvious. He is walking with our Lord now and the Spirit is with him. He is attending Crossroads Church with me and I am going to give it to him Sunday when I see him there.
--

The Foundry - Wallingford, Pa - November 2008

Got it: The Foundry participated in The Domino Effect series.

Gave it: As a church, we have passed the domino to many missionaries who have come to us to speak. We sent some to people who minister in Russia, Ireland, and Spain. We encourage people to pass the domino and celebrate good wherever they come into contact with it.

--

Shari - Plymouth, Mich. - November 2008

Got it: I received my domino on the last day of studying The Domino Effect book with a small group from NorthRidge Church.

Gave it: I decided to send it to my Aunt Joyce and Uncle Mickey as they were very instrumental in my introduction to Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I'm so thankful for them and for all their love and encouragement they've given me during my lifetime. I mailed it to them with a letter explaining why I was sending it and instructed them what to do with it once they received it.

--

Christina - Glenolden, Pa. - November 2008

Got it: I got the domino from The Foundry. We were doing the series.

Gave it: It took me a while to pass it on. I decided to give it to my friend from work, Laura. We are complete opposites, yet we get along really well. Whenever I was stuck for a ride home she gave me one. Whenever I was having problems she listened and gave her support. She is also a single mom trying to raise two adorable kids and doing a fabulous job at it. I see the grace of God in her everyday. I can't wait to hear her story.

--

Stephanie - Sparta - October 2008

Got it: I recieved the domino at a camp that i work at. We did The Domino Effect as a devotional book and at the end of the summer they gave us all a domino and told us what to do with it.

Gave it: I gave the domino to my 11th grade teacher, who was also my speech teacher in 12th grade. I didn't realize how important his impact on my life was till I started college this year and teachers didn't care as much as he did. He seemed to connect with his students in a way that no other teacher connected with me. I am an easy A type of person - it doesn't take much for me to get an A - and in his class i was challenged, which made me feel more "normal". I also like his sense of humor, even though people may disagree. I think that he really deserved to receive the domino; this way he'll realize how much of a great person he really is.

After I decided I was going to give it to him, I had to find time to go back to the school and give it to him. So, at my brother's parent/teacher conferences, I went back with my mom and wrote a note, wrapped it around the domino and gave it to him. He smiled and continued on with his conferences.

I really miss his class and really high school in general. I know that my sound weird, but that's just who I am. I like school, and it's even better when you have good teachers like Mr. Burrows.

--

Chase - Greenville, SC  - October 2008

Got it: I got the domino from attending The Domino Effect study at my church.

Gave it: I gave the domino personally to Chad Norris, but I did not give it to him. I gave it to the ministry that he is a part of. The Wayfarer guys have had a huge impact in my life mostly by helping to shape my theology through one of their projects, Engage. Chad, Dave, and Chris are incredible people and communicators. I am truly blessed knowing that I can call these three Godly men (not to mention Robert Neely and David Reichley) friends and brothers in Christ.

--

Brett - Simpsonville, SC - October 2008

Brian - Greenville, SC - March 2008
Got it: At Engage
Gave it: This past summer I was able to return to Cambodia. I spent two years there as a "Missionary." (It's always been a little difficult to refer to oneself as a "Missionary") It was there that I passed on my domino to a friend of mine who is a 46-year old Japenese-American from Hawaii. She is a nurse and has been in Cambodia for the past 8 years or so. But I know God has used her in an awesome way! There are so many villagers and locals who know her by name and have experienced the love of Christ as she goes out to the villages to do medical clinics, Bible-storying, and teaching. To me her life is like that domino because she has had such an effect on so many of the locals there.
--

She has continued to support and care for me throughout my life. Now, as the grandmother to my two sons, she has spent endless hours praying for them daily. She also continues to be a strong support to me as an adult and as a parent. I love her, and I can never thank her enough for being the first example of Christ and His love in my life.

He truly touched my heart like no one else, and we became best friends throughout the year. Got it: I got one from a friend who I invited and encouraged to come to church who has now come to know Christ through our camp. I got another from a friend who wanted to remind me how important our friendship was and how it led to an amazing change in both of our lives. The moral is, never taken for granted the things in our lives which seem to be insignificant. In both instances, friends' lives were changed by things I found to be "the right thing to do." God works in the details!

Gave it: I’m passing the domino to my small group leader Scott Shuford. It was nothing huge but it meant a lot in my life. We were talking, and a member of our group started talking, and Scott said facetiously, “If that is gossip, I don’t want to hear it.” It was something about the phrase and his steadfast nature that was a huge shining light for Christ. It just influenced me to follow after God’s own heart even stronger.
--
Todd - Greenville, SC - April 2007
Got it: at Engage
Gave it: My best friend from back home is getting married in one month. I gave him some Tommy Nelson Song of Solomon sermons and a few dominos for him and his future wife. They love each other and the Lord so much, and I want the very best for both of them. I want his marriage to be so rewarding and beautiful. And in a couple of years when I get married, if the CDs have helped his marriage be fulfilling, I would love for him to give them back to me. I gave him the dominos and unleashed good on his life, and hopefully he will do good with it and pass it on to others.

Gave it: My best friend Tyler’s birthday was just a few days after I got the domino. Her humbleness and unconditional love for me have profoundly affected me and given me a window into what God’s goodness can look like on earth.

Gave it: I never realized just how great my best friend truly is until being separated from her when we went to two separate colleges. Even though I don’t see her but a handful of times a year, I have learned that my best friend Gillian has walked with Christ all her life. Her constant love and support in my own life has been a blessing. I thank God for putting such a beautiful woman in my life. That is why I passed her my domino.

Got it: Erica, my summer missionary, gave it to me, and I am touched buy God's influnce in her life through me. California church is fun, and we had fun with the girls from South Carolina. Believe it or not, we know how to fry chicken and sing biscuits-and-gravy gospel praise music. We don't have to comprimise the truth the have some fun. There are enough uptight people to go around, and when you are not, people will be drawn to you. God gave us a sense of humor, and together we engaged it and praised Jesus.

Gave it: I wasn't quite sure how to pass my domino the first week that I got it. I held onto it for a little while until I figured out who to give it to. There is a guy I work with who has been struggling with this whole Kingdom of God thing. He has been a Christian for years, and only recently has been trying to turn his life around. He has helped me out in many ways at work, including inviting me to his house for dinner. He and I have had a strained relationship, but we both have been Jesus to each other. He is the one that I passed the Domino to, not only because I saw God in the things he has done, but also because he needs his dominos to start going in the other direction.

Gave it: I was so inspired, I stashed a handful of dominos into my purse, and over the next two weeks I began handing them out. The first one I gave to an 87-year-old woman I met during work. She told me God had told her to come talk to me, and because the conversation brightened my day so much, I passed her a domino. The next one I gave to my friend Jack, who I don't get to see often enough. He is an amazing reflection of the Lord, and I wanted to encourage him. So I wrapped a note around the domino and left it on his car. Then I gave one to my beautiful friend MG. She normally attends Engage but was gone the week they handed out dominos. My next two dominos went to two complete strangers. My fiance and I had just bought a grill at Home Depot and were struggling to put it in the back of my SUV. Just as we realized it would not fit, two men offered to put it in the back of their truck and follow us home. A little part of us wondered if they would drive off with our shiny grill, but they didn't. When we arrived home and unloaded our new purchase, I tried to hand the men some money, but they refused. So instead I gave them each a domino and told them to pass them on to someone who adds to the story of good in their lives just as they added to the story of good in mine.

Gave it: I passed my domino to a wonderful Christian named Adrienne. She and her husband are moving to China to hopefully have many opportunities to share the story of Christ. She is an amazing person who looks for opportunities daily to share the gospel.

Gave it: I was a summer missionary in Beaufort, SC, last summer. My coordinator there has been an amazing inspiration in my life and has been a huge supporter through prayer and encouragement. I had the opportunity to see him Easter Sunday. I was able to tell him that he has been a part of a great good in my life. We talked, cried, and encouraged each other through more conversations that day. He wanted to hold onto the domino for a while before passing it on.

Gave it: I gave it to my brother Rick. In the past six months, he has given up his entire life to follow Jesus. He was recently asked to come to Germany for 10 months as a missionary. He too comes to Engage, and I wanted him to pass on his story.

Gave it: I passed the domino (along with a burned copy of an Engage talk) to my little sister in North Carolina. After five years of separation, it broke the ice. This weekend will be only the second time I’ve seen her in five years. God is good!

Gave it: I gave my domino to a close friend of mine, Ashley. She is about ten years older than me and is always trying to teach me from her mistakes she made at my age (23). Although I'm pretty stubborn and have to learn the hard way, she never gives up on me! She has been a great Christian influence in my life as long as I've known her. I thank God for her!

The start of the Domino Effect – April 2007

In spring 2007, the Engage community in upstate South Carolina did a series called The Domino Effect: Falling forward into the story of good and evil. As we concluded the series, we decided to start a domino effect by starting small businesses in Ethiopia. In one night, a group of 300 people gave $6,172 toward this project.
In celebration, each person in attendance got a domino and this instruction: when someone does something that adds to the story of good in your life, give them the domino. Those people then passed the dominos on to someone else, and a story of good began spreading in our world.

Now The Domino Effect series is available via DVD, and more people have been invited to join the domino effect.
