Dumpster Diving :: Finding God in unexpected places
Most of us look at a dumpster and see a place to put trash. But some people look at a dumpster and see it as a place to find treasure. These people are dumpster divers – adventurers who believe they can find things of great value in the most unexpected places.
Throughout the Bible, we find stories of people who stumbled onto God in unexpected places – times when they were stopped at a dead end, when they were stressed at a pressure point, and when they were isolated in solitary confinement. As we dive into their stories of excavation, we will learn more about how we can find God in our own lives.

THE HEARTBEAT OF DUMPSTER DIVING
Most of us look at a dumpster and see a place to put trash. But some people look at a dumpster and see it as a place to find treasure. These people are dumpster divers – adventurers who believe they can find things of great value in the most unexpected places.
Throughout the Bible, we find stories of people who stumbled onto God in unexpected places – times when they were stopped at a dead end, when they were stressed at a pressure point, and when they were isolated in solitary confinement. As we dive into their stories of excavation, we will learn more about how we can find God in our own lives. ABOUT THE ART
We are all dumpster divers. Now, that doesn’t mean that we all dig through bags of lettuce-laden junk, clinging on to the hope that under every used coffee filter we might find a travel alarm clock in perfect working condition. Some of us are “executive dumpster divers.” Instead of digging through trash bags, we dig through yard sale tables, hoping that under every loved stuffed animal we might find a travel alarm clock in perfect working condition.
And then there’s the internet. We can browse through pages and pages of eBay items, quickly filtering our search to exclude all stuffed animals and stereo equipment so that we only see travel alarm clocks in perfect working condition. The point is that, whether it is paid for or free, socially acceptable or not, we all find value in things that someone else finds worthless. We’ve eaten somebody else’s leftovers (maybe even without permission – you know who you are) and worn hand-me-down clothing. We are all adventuring through life stumbling onto treasure in unexpected places. This artwork deals with the thrill of the hunt and the eager anticipation of what surprises may lie around every corner. Danger. Excitement. Celebration. The ubiquitous treasure opportunities and the elevation of trash to treasure. When you find treasure, let it captivate you. Celebrate it. Share it. And know that it is only a small taste of the treasures that are yet undiscovered (treasures even better than a travel alarm clock in perfect working condition). ![]() SESSION OUTLINE
Session One :: Dumpster Diving
Genesis 22:1-18
The point: In the places of life where others reject Him, know God is near and start to expect Him
We can find God in unexpected places. And so we begin the excavation process, digging to find God in the places where others reject Him. As we do this, we discover that we can expect God to be near, and we come to understand what the excavation process expects from us.
Session Two :: Stop Sign
Acts 12:1-19
The point: When the road of your life stops at a dead end, wake up to God and let new life begin
We all run into dead ends in our lives. When this happens, we’re tempted to give up, but the truth is that we can actually find God at these dead ends. When we listen for God’s voice and hold onto hope, we can experience how God lets new life begin at our dead ends.
Session Three :: Stress Test
Jeremiah 29:1-14
The point: When the stresses of life start to annoy you, start finding God in the place pressure points you
Stress tests in our lives aren’t fun, but these pressure points can actually point us toward God. So instead of trying to escape pressure and stress, we need to learn to find God in the middle of these tests. When we do, we can experience how something valuable and beautiful can happen in the pressure points of our lives.
Session Four :: Solitary Confinement
Luke 17:11-19
The point: When it feels like you are all on your own, thank God that He never leaves you alone
We will all face loneliness and isolation in our lives, and so we need to learn to find God in these moments of solitary confinement. Thankfully, God never leaves us, even when we’re the loneliest of the lonely. So we can connect with God and learn to connect with others no matter how isolated we may be.
